Pino d'Asti, Piedmont, Italy

The Ferrero family has been farming the hills of Pino d'Asti for four generations. The shift toward organic viticulture began in 1986, when Luca's great-uncle Giorgio started implementing certified organic methods on the family farm — an unusually forward-thinking decision for the era. When Luca Ferrero took ownership in 2014, he inherited both the land and that ethos, then pushed it further with more precise methodologies across the vineyard and cellar.

The grape at the center of everything is Freisa — a historic, deeply local Piedmontese variety that Luca's ancestors recognized early as the perfect expression of this particular hillside. Luca describes Freisa as "a sixteen-year-old rebel, with creativity and the desire to discover the world." It's rustic, a little rough, and completely unlike the polished international varieties that dominate most wine shelves. That's exactly the point.
