Moon Hollow Ranch sits atop Moon Mountain in Sonoma County — a 740-acre estate spanning both Sonoma and Napa counties, purchased by Michael and Xochi Birch in 2011. The Birches are best known as the founders of The Battery, San Francisco's celebrated private members club, but Moon Hollow represents a different kind of vision: a fully regenerative, self-sustaining farm where vines and animals live in an interconnected ecosystem.

The property is home to pigs, sheep, goats, ducks, geese, and chickens — all of which play an active role in the health of the vineyard. Only 18 acres of the estate are dedicated to wine production, yielding roughly 2,000 cases a year of small-batch estate wines. Moon Hollow opened its first tasting room on historic Sonoma Plaza in mid-2024, bringing the estate's wines to a wider audience for the first time.

Moon Mountain's volcanic soils — formed by prehistoric lava flows over five million years ago — give Moon Hollow's wines a rocky, mineral backbone distinct from valley floor Sonoma. Elevations on the estate range from 400 to over 2,000 feet, placing the vineyards above the fog line and into a warmer, slower-ripening microclimate with excellent natural drainage. The result is Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and white blends of real concentration and freshness.

Winemaker Mark Herold and viticulturalist Phil Coturri — one of California's most respected organic farming advocates — collaborate on every vintage. The philosophy is minimal intervention: let the vineyard express itself, and don't get in the way. Crushing is done at nearby Anaba Winery to keep batches small and hands-on.

Michael and Xochi Birch founded Moon Hollow Ranch in 2011 with a long-term vision of regenerative agriculture and estate winemaking. Wine Director Christophe Tassan — a recipient of France's prestigious Meilleur Ouvrier de France honor and a former sommelier at The Battery — oversees the wine program with deep expertise and an approachable style. General Manager Amanda Lorren, an 18-year hospitality veteran, runs the tasting room on Sonoma Plaza. Winemaker Mark Herold and organic viticulturalist Phil Coturri round out the team in the vineyard and cellar.
