Santo Stefano Roero, Piedmont, Italy

Alberto Oggero grew up among the vines of Santo Stefano Roero hearing his grandfather Sandro's favorite saying — "J vissi s'amparu sensa maestra," a Piedmontese expression meaning "I learned to live without a teacher." As a child, Alberto was always in a hurry. The vines taught him otherwise. His entire philosophy as a winemaker traces back to that lesson: wine has its own tempo, and the job of the producer is only to accompany it — never to rush it.

The winery is based in the Roero, the lesser-known but deeply compelling wine country on the north bank of the Tanaro River — sandy soils, steep hillsides, and a terroir that gives Arneis its freshness and Nebbiolo its particular lift and elegance. Alberto's ambition is straightforward and quietly bold: to become the benchmark producer for the Roero.
